Where Butterflies Wander by Suzanne Redfearn tells the story of Marie, Leo and their three children Hannah (15), Brendon (12), and Pen (8) as they move to an old family homestead following a family tragedy. Their plan is to fix up and sell the property but upon their arrival, they discover that Davina, a woman called ‘The River Witch’ by locals, is living on the land. The conflict over Davina’s right to remain on the property divides Marie and Davina and drives a wedge in the family (as well as inflaming the community!).
I really enjoyed the multiple POV writing approach that Redfearn used in this book. Each family member as well as Davina narrate short chapters. This approach allowed me to relate to most characters and better understand their individual experiences and points of view.
I found Davina's character most intriguing and sympathetic; getting to know her, learning her backstory and reading about her living arrangements kept me curious about this character. Little Pen, the young daughter struggling with grief, is equally attaching. The mother Marie—however—I found to be a harsh character. Her lack of empathy seemed a bit exaggerated (but helped move the story along at a faster pace).
A butterfly appears at key moments in the story as well; a symbolic link to a lost family member.
It’s a wonderful story about motherhood and family dynamics that also delves gently into topics of trauma, grief and healing.
