Lisa See books in order | Powerful stories of Chinese women

Lisa See is an author I love because of the way she brings Chinese and Chinese immigrant history to life. She was born in Paris, grew up in Los Angeles, and was surrounded by the stories of her own Chinese American family—many of which inspired the inspiring novels she writes today.

I discovered her when reading her bestseller, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Lisa See centres her stories on the lives of women, capturing their resilience, friendships, and sacrifices.

While many books of her time offered male-centered stories, she was among the first to combine meticulously researched female history with deeply personal, female-driven narratives, revealing cultural traditions, social struggles, and family dynamics as experienced by women.

A movie adaptation of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was released in 2011 which delves into these themes beautifully as well, which I highly recommend!

In this guide, I am happy to share all Lisa See books in order, to help you discover her work. You’ll find that some of her novels can stand alone, while others are best read as a series.

Standalone novels

I think of Lisa See’s standalone novels as self-contained windows into different eras and experiences. Each one introduces you to a new set of characters so reading them in order is not necessary.

Here are her six standalone novels (and her upcoming release, Daughters of the Sun and Moon set to come come out in June 2026):

2005

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

2007

Peony in Love

2014

China Dolls

2017

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane

2019

The Island of Sea Women

2023

Lady Tan's Circle of Women

2026

Daughters of the Sun and Moon

The Red Princess Mysteries

In this series, you’ll meet Liu Hulan, a brilliant but conflicted Chinese detective who is constantly caught between her duty, her country, and her heart. I recommend reading this series in order as you’ll see the evolution of her relationship with detective David Stark, her American counterpart. You’ll also notice that the cases intertwine in fascinating ways.

1997

Flower Net

1999

The Interior

2002

Dragon Bones

The May and Pearl Novels

The May and Pearl series is a great place to start if you’re new to Lisa See. This series follows two sisters from glamorous 1930s Shanghai to Los Angeles. This series needs to be read in order.

2009

Shanghai Girls

2011

Dreams of Joy

Reading all of Lisa See books in order of publication (or not)

Though it’s not necessary to read every novel in sequence, following Lisa See books in order lets you fully experience her characters’ growth, especially in series like the Red Princess Mysteries and the May and Pearl novels. It also deepens your appreciation of the Chinese and Chinese American history, culture, and family dynamics woven throughout her stories.
